"He Ki'i, He Aka: Reawakening Hula Ki'i in Shadow and Light" features the return of Kekuhi Keali'ikanaka'oleohaililani and Taupouri Tangaro (aka Kaipo Frias) as they delve further into the enigmatic world of Hula Ki'i. This second offering expands on their 2024 presentation by exploring underrepresented expressions of Hula Ki'i, particularly shadow dancing—both literal and symbolic—as practiced in ancient Hawai'i. From the sacred legacy of Kapoulakina'u and Kewelani to the secular, satirical ki'i of the 19th century, this presentation honors the diverse genealogies of image dances. Through story, chant, and movement, Kekuhi and Tangaro invite audiences into a deeper conversation with image, form, and reflection—into the spaces where shadows speak and spirits are made visible.
